AVG Update needs Restart

Donna

Hello,
I keep getting the same message from my AVG 8.0 FREE Edition, which
I have set to auto update on start of my computer...Update needs restart.
Already have done the re-download and repair as per their instructions,
do I need to do it again?
Takes alot of time and if it isn''t working what am I doing wrong?
Any hints and yes I do like AVG cause its free, easy to figure out
and came with the computer. XP pro.
FYI the shield has a red box with ! in it and when I open the Update Manager
it says component not working properly and Update needs Restart.

Personally, I think AVG has been too problematic to recommend. If you want a
free antivirus, I prefer Avast. I also like Avira but the free version
comes with a rather startling nag screen so I don't recommend it to
clients.

Yep

I agree. AVG has become so troublesome I've switched to Avast.

Can't really complain though as they are free products after all.

I use AVG, but the Pro version and have contacted their technical staff in
the past. However, I have heard good things about Nod 32. I was thinking
about changing to Nod 32 when my AVG license expires, but now you recommend
Avast. Is Avast better than Nod 32, or is it just because Nod 32 is not
free?

I'm sure that Malke will reply with her point of view, but let me also
tell you mine, which I suspect will be the same as hers:

NOD32 is the best anti-virus program available. Avast, which is only
slightly inferior to NOD32, is the best freeware anti-virus program
available.

Ken and I are in 100% complete agreement. NOD32 is the only commercial
antivirus that I offer my clients because I think it's the best. If they
just can't pay for an antivirus (or don't want to), I install Avast.

if it says it needs a restart, then go ahead and do it.

the program knows what is going on.

have been using avg for years with NO problems.
including using the email scanner active.

tried avast ONCE and found it chewed up approx 30% of the processor.
so it is dead.

sometimes when avg makes a MAJOR update it does require a restart in XP.
vista and windows 7 are more forgiving on restarts.

I guess it's a matter of semantics?

http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

avast! 4 Home Edition works for 60 days after the installation in demo
mode. You will obtain your FREE license key by E-mail after the
registration. The license key is valid for 1 year. After one year you
will need to just re-register.

Yes. I should have made clearer (but I forgot) the need to reregister
once a year.

But the major point I was making is that it remains free, no matter
how long you want to use it.

I personally like AVG and have no problems with it.

Just uninstall it and download a clean version.

I just did that, after it told me my licence key was wrong and must be
reentered.

I understand. I only remember the re-registration thing once a year.

And I have a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in semantics. ;-)

It is a good free anti-virus program.

No. It's free for as long as you want it.

Sorry to disagree but it isn't. Here's a snippet of the text from the
web page at http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php:

mode. You will obtain your FREE license key by E-mail after the
registration. The license key is valid for 1 year. After one year you
will need to just re-register.

So all you have to do is re-register the software each year that you use
it, and it's still free.

That's correct. Yes, you have to re-register once a year to keep it
free, but that means that "It's free for as long as you want it," as I
said.

Uninstall it completely then reboot and reinstall, not repair install.

Yea, I noticed a virus update as well as a program update yesterday. I
update manually to prevent things from happening when I am not watching. The
program update was interesting. Required two reboots for some reason. I do
not use e-mail scanning or web scanning, to invading.

After the first reboot, I also had the red exclamation point. Went away
after the second reboot.

With all reboots done and one more virus update applied, program works
great.

You may need to uninstall and reinstall if you have an issue. Sometimes
things get corrupted.

All in all, I have been happy with AVG 8.0.

Thanks for your help to all posted here. Have uninstalled and re-installed so far so good.
