AVG update error

Whenever I update AVG I now get (it used to work!) the pop-up message
"something bad has happened..." after the installation has finished. The
error file avgw.err shows:

Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION
Fault address: 77AB1FE3 01:00060FE3 C:\WINNT\system32\ole32.dll
Module Date: 03/11/2004 22:29:21
File Version of C:\WINNT\system32\ole32.dll: 5.0.2195.6906
Exception Date: 06/23/2005 10:43:33
File Version of C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgw.exe: 7.1.0.321

I have tried re-installing the latest version from scratch then using the
Repair option all to no avail. Anybody any ideas? I am on Win2K SP4.

No, but I can not reach the update site today... Seems the last several
weeks there has been an on and off again problem with updates. I just
installed and can not contact the website to finish the installation...

Not software but AVG's web sites or connectivity... Normally I do this near
midnight and do not have the same problems - it is like their is an attack
going on? I know nothing except is easier at midnight to do AVG updates.

You get what you pay for. Seriously, the problems you both are having
with the free version of AVG are not isolated and are one of the
reasons why I no longer recommend AVG for my clients. Avast has a free
version - the interface is dreadful but the software seems to work. I
think it is worth paying for an antivirus - I use F-Prot on all my
Windows machines ($30 single-user can be put on 4 machines and $50
corporate version can be put on 10 machines). There are lots of good av
programs, just not Norton or McAfee.
