AVG query

Every so often my AVG email scanner pops up, saying it is connecting to
xxx.xx.xxxx or some such numbered site.

It will then stay popped up for about 1-2 minutes (sometimes longer).

What is this?

If you don't have a firewall download and install sygate personal
(free) its log will show which application or service is calling out.
You should also get tcpview and process explorer from sysinternals.
 
I use ZoneAlarm (free)
