AVG newbie question

I have a W2k machine running with service pack 2. When I check Windows Task
Manager/Processes, I find CMD.EXE loaded at least 15 times. Thinking virus,
when I run NAV 7 with the latest update, it crashes my machine.

I'm told I should try AVG 6...the free-for-personal-use version. The problem is
that after I fill out the form with email address etc, and click to actually get
the DL, I get a 404 error....page not found.

Anyone get this version within the last several days or am I doing something
wrong. AVG sends me via email the serial to use, I just can't use it because I
can't download the program. AArrrgggg!!!

Help!!!

thanks

I had the same problem. Their free version download wouldn't connect. But I
was persistent and finally got it (in the middle of the night) after several
tries. I'm not entirely happy with it, however, as after installing it, it
said that my Outlook Express 6 email is not protected. That's contrary to,
and inconsistent with, indications elsewhere in their GUI modules. Their
post-download readme file suggested downloading a special "universal email
proxy" utility that works with all pop3/smtp accounts. I did so and tried
it, but it resulted in multiple errors and had to be uninstalled. So I'm at
the point where I would opt for a different, better anti-virus with email
protection if it comes along. I imagine that AVG is OK otherwise, just won't
protect Outlook Express 6 email. The plugin in that regard is apparently
deceptive(?).

I got my copy yesterday...finally. I was amazed at how fast it checked my
files. It did find the nachi worm.

But my problem still persists.....15 copies of CMD.EXE loaded (according to Task
Manager/Processes). The only time I don't have this situation is when I get an
'scvhost' error during Windows startup. Soo....it doesn't seem to be caused by
a virus.

Go figure.

Perhaps it is caused by the nachi worm. Here's a link...

It's not healed if there are 15 cmd.exe's running! Look for manual methods
to remove that worm and repair the damage. There is no guarantee that the
computer can be repaired completely, so you might have to reinstall your op
system.

When I finally got AVG installed and ran it, it found the Nachi worm and
'healed' my PC. But I still have 15 cmd.exe's showing in 'Task
Manager/Processes'.

Any advice?
