AVG Free V7.0 Problems

I'm running Windows XP, SP2 applied, Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5,
latest build of AVG with latest defs.

Damn Personal Email Scanner is turning itself off every day. Control
Center shows it is not functional, I activate it, shows functional
again. Download some email, it checks it. On a later email download,
it shows greyed out in the taskbar, and no popup showing it scanning at
all. Control Center it's not functional again. Been doing this on and
off for some days now. I was having it check both the SBC POP3 server
port and the SMTP server port, but have since turned off the SMTP since
it always ended up saying it was disabled anyway.

I had a major system crash a couple weeks ago, and had to wipe the drive
and reinstall XP and all software including AVG (using latest build).
Prior to this I was running dual boot Windows 2000 and XP with AVG
giving me no problems on Windows 2000 (I didn't use the XP side very
much, and not for email downloads, so I don't know if this is an XP
problem.)

Anybody seen this sort of thing with AVG?

Are you using the Personal Email scanner, or one of the specialized
plugins? Do you have more than one email client installed? What is your
default email client?

I'm using the Personal Email scanner, with Thunderbird as the only email
client. I did have more than one plugin installed, but I removed the
Outlook one (which I never used since I don't use Outlook) - no effect
on the problem.

Oh, and it can't be a firewall issue, since Kerio has allowed the
Scanner to work every time it was working, and has rules to do so.

Once I uninstalled AVG, I took a look at the log file. It had an error
message saying something about "no email server available - Err: 2" -
which a Google search turned up nothing about.

For now, I'm using Avast (which also, incidentally, supposedly found a
trojan in a downloaded program which I have never installed which AVG
never noticed - could be a false positive, I haven't double-checked it
yet.)
