Thanks, PA Bear. I was looking for it.

The version 7 install does the version 6 uninstall on your behalf (according
to the dialogue I read while installing)

And indeed, it did uninstall 6.

Yup. About the only possible negative (for Win98SE) that I can see is that
it appears to use a bit more system resources.

I think my System/User Resources percentage dropped about 9 or 10% (in
comparison to version 6). Somebody correct me if I'm wrong - or maybe
they can verify. (You can check that just before updating, and thus see
the change)

I am interested in any reports of problems using AVG 7 free edition. I read a post
here where the user's computer shuts down instead of loading the desktop, if the
boot scanner is enabled.

Also, in my testing for compatibility here, on Windows 95B, the AVG Control Center
is periodically causing the system to lock up when avgcc.exe stops responding. In
Win95B here, it also interferes with power management's ability to turn off the
monitor after a set time. Apparently it was not tested on Win95 as well as it was
on later operating systems.

It says in the AVG pdf help reference file that AVG 7 "can also be run in
Win95, but in this case, IE 5.01 or higher is required". The previous
sentence in that same file implies that it was designed for Win98 and newer
systems, however.

Incidentally, I might have been off - it looks like the System Resources
went down by around only 5% or a bit more, in comparison to AVG 6.

I've just loaded mine,

The load process, advised quite clearly that it was beneficial
to uninstall Ver 6 firstly, which I did.

All is loaded and everything looks/seems fine, (Win98se)

My resources went from 56% to 65% after installation.

???? Something doesn't add up here. The newer version is MORE resource
hungry (has more features) than the older one. Maybe you didn't do a
clean reboot before the test (while still using version 6) and after the
test (with version 7).

You're probably right there Bill.

Support for AVG 6 Free will end 31 Dec-04. You should be able to install
AVG 7 Free without uninstalling AVG 6 Free and without new registration.

More precisely, the installation of 7 will carry out an uninstall of 6
in the process

The instructions I read said that the install program would uninstall the
previous version during the install of the new version, which it did. It was
not necessary for me to manually uninstall the old version.

Probably unrelated (I can't remember if this prob started before/after I
upgraded to V7) but I can no longer "receive" email using Outlook 2003 or
Mailwasher. Both apps time out when connecting to POP3.
I have....

disabled firewall, turned off AVG outlook plug-in, confirmed no
probs at ISP's end, checked web mail (without probs) from ISPs web mail
site. Detect and repair of Outlook, replaced pop3.xtra.co.nz with
203.96.92.132 in the email account options.
Still nothing.

I know they are different. You'll be seeing this because of the OPs original
cross-post.
I tapped my story on the end of the OP as it may (but prob not) be caused by
the AVG upgrade.

B

Bill in Co.

Well, if you're in that boat, that is rather unfortunate, since AVG version
6 won't have any updates after the end of this year, as I recall.

J

Jeff

I do not have a problem (anymore) in my system, but others have as noted in
the messages on that new forum.
