AVG #506 Updating Bootable Recovery Disk

G

Gary

For those using AVG...

For those making a Recovery Disk using Update #506 will get an error
message when creating the second disk. The error message doesn't say it but
the Avg6.avi file is too large to fit on a standard 1.4 floppy.

The AVG Recovery Disk, which is floppy 2of2 of the AVG Bootable Recovery
Disk series, needs to be reformatted from 1.4 to 1.7 for the Avg6.avi file
to fit.

After I reformatted the second floppy disk to 1.7 and went through the disk
creation process all was well and the recovery disk was successfully
created using Update #506 in AVG.

How'd you accomplish this "super format"? Do you know of a freeware that
does this?

Thanks.

HD Copy [80Kbs]
"Dos program to format floppies to 1.72Mb, includes FDread to enable Dos to
read the higher density floppies..."

Direct Download

I'm using fdfmt.exe but for the life of me I can't find a link to a
download site. If I remember correctly it was buried in a web page
somewhere and would not be picked up by Google. What I like about it is
that it doesn't label the floppy whereas HD Copy does.

Maybe someone has a link to fdfmt.exe.

Thanks, Gary. The SuperFormat program bambam suggested weighs in at 20KB
(zipped), requires no install (runs from the zip file) and seems to do the
job nicely. I have, however, downloaded HD Copy as a backup. }:O)

Note re: SuperFormat & HD-Copy

I couldn't get either to work properly under WinXP Home Ed. Both would
give errors at the end of the format, rendering the diskettes unuseable by
AVG. I tried a variety of different brand name media to no avail.

On a hunch, I rebooted into Win98se and ran SuperFormat successfully with
no errors. AVG rescue disk created successfully using this diskette.

I forgot to try HD-COPY at the time, but I will make a point of it next
time I use Win98 and report back here with the results, unless someone else
beats me to it.

I think your post is the second report of difficulties with XP and this
kind of non-standard format. I'll add a note to the Pricelessware
description.

I don't have win98se, any other freeware that will work with XP?

I used to use a utility called Maxiflop to product floppies that were
something like 1.65M. When I transferred over to a new computer in
June, I discovered to my chagrin that XP doesn't read them. Heck, XP
isn't all that crazy about some of my older non-maximized floppies
(solution seems to be to reformat them using the XP machine).

There are MANY posts in the various XP newsgroups about floppies and
floppy drives.

I couldn't get either to work properly under WinXP Home Ed.

I'm not using XP Home Ed (Win9x) but I did come across this:

"Can't Format a Floppy Disk in Windows XP and 2000"
http://www.cs.bsu.edu/homepages/gjjones/administrivia/categories/computerHe
lpdesk/2003/06/12.html

The workaround seems to be to based upon turning off the AV in XP before
formatting a floppy. Just thought that maybe turning off AVG in XP might be
a workaround to allow SuperFormat or HD Copy to work in XP.

You can try Tformat.zip. It gives you choice of formatting a disk at 1.4
or 1.7 mb. This program can also does some clever programming tricks to
make, "Track zero bad. Disk unusable" not only usable but also bootable.
A worthy program in anyones collection. You can get it from:

http://members.tripod.com/ieeecrce/innovations99/tformat/tformat.zip

Thanks, but it, too, is only Win9x compatible. I use XP, mostly, as my work
Windows OS. I have 98 reserved for my kids' games only.
If you want the tech.details go to but be prepared for popups :)

Pop...up? Whassat? }:O)

Hmmm. Turn of my AV? In *Windows*? You jest... };O)

S'OK, for the amount of times that I might require this utility, I'll just
reboot to Win98.

Or make/download a boot floppy for pure DOS - or build a bootable CD
of DOS-only tools and testers.
