avast weirdness

For a couple of years I used AVG as an antivirus program and recently
changed to Symantec Corporate version 8.1 since the company allowed us
to install it on our personal computers. Although it works fine I
wanted to try the Avast program that many rave about here.

AVG is configured to not load on bootup. Avast also was configured to
not load on bootup. Symantec is the only resident antivrus program
running. After installing Avast I noticed some very strange occurrences
with my 16-bit applications. In Windows 2000 when a 16-bit application
is started the file named WOWEXEC.EXE is also loaded by the OS. This is
the Windows on Windows environment needed to run these programs. Well,
neither WOWEXEC or my 16-bit applications would start up. This was
confirmed by a look at Task Manager.

I tried reinstalling the affected programs but their setup packages
wouldn't run either. Eventually I uninstalled Avast and everything went
back to normal. Personally I don't care that Avast won't run on my
system since I don't like the GUI at all, but this is a problem that
shouldn't be happening. I know some will say get rid of the 16-bit
applications, but these are old card games that I like and can't find
suitable substitutions for them yet. Regardless of that, I'm sure there
are others that use 16-bit applications who may be experiencing the same
symptoms and they need to know of this problem.

I run Avast and 16-bit applications dating back to '93 with no problems.

I've never heard of Wowexec.exe. What OS are you running?

Are you running both Symantec and Avast in real-time?

For the duration of Swen, my address is inoperative.
