AVAST "Internet Mail" protection??

J

joeb

I don't use "Internet" email. I use Agent. Will Avast Pro protect me
from receiving malware when retrieving email via Agent?

I know F-Secure does, but I'm having too many problems with F-Secure. I
have to find another AV product pronto! (Don't mention KAV. I was using
AVP since Central Command, but KAV's new bloatware plus their halfassed
support did me in as far as any further use of their product is
concerned.)

I need an excellent AV product that also offers excellent trojan
protection. I am not looking for a half-effective freebie.

?

I found the answer on their Web page. Missed it the first time around.
It does protect POP3 mail.

I use avast! free version with Forte Agent. Works very well indeed!

A bit hassle to setup (needed to do it manually) but works great!

I have set it up to move infected attachements to the Virus Chest,
and to mark suspicous messages in the subject (you cannot setup the
free version of avast! to automaticly delete the attachments).

I also altered the Agent .ini file to show the "Attachment:" header
(it will show all info about attachements avast! hs detected :)

This is a small "guide" I made (if you need to set it up
manually - I did - the automatic configuration failed):

How to setup avast! mail-scanner with Forte Agent
"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

In the Forte Agent configuration file "agent.ini"
please check that these lines are in these sections
(change <xxx> parts to your servers and your adress):

[Servers]
MailServer="127.0.0.1"
POPServer="127.0.0.1"
SMTPPort=25
POPPort=110
SMTPServerPort=25

POPAccount="<your-e-mail-adresse-here>#<your-pop3-server-here>"

If you only use the default pop3 server you can drop
the part from "#" and the rest of the line. If you use several
pop3 servers you can select what pop3 server to use after "#"

In the avast! configuration file "avast.ini"
please check that these lines are in these sections
(change <xxxx> parts to your servers and your adress):

[Communication]
SMTPServer=<your-smtp-server-here>
SMTPFrom=<your-e-mail-adresse-here>
SMTPPort=25

[MailScanner]
DefaultPopServer=<your-pop3-server-here>
DefaultSmtpServer=<your-smtp-server-here>
ShowTrayIcon=0
UseDefaultSmtp=1
AutoSetProtection=1
Trust=127.0.0.1
PassThrough=0

"Trust=127.0.0.1" ensures that only your PC can use avast!'s
mail-server (otherwise it can be used from other places on the
net - if the access is not blocked in your firewall that is)

"PassTrough=0" stops all mail useage until the avast! mail-
scanner is active (to prevent unscanned mail passing through)

Boy! Thanks for taking the time for this great effort. I'll squirrel
this away in my info files.
