My computer reports physical memory of 256MB. It reports available physical memory as just 52 MB. What could be the reasons that so much RAM is not available? (Windows XP on Dell Dimension 8200)

Do you have a lot of programs resting on your taskbar?
TSR's can eat up a lot of memory.
Adware etc.. running in the background could also be the culprit.
If you hit CTRL ALT DEL and look at both "Applications" and "Processes" you
can see what's running and taking up all that RAM.

See what programs and processes you have running in the background. If
your computer is running slowly, try and minimize those programs. Be
sure your computer is virus and spyware-free.

Windows is designed to use all, or nearly all, your RAM all the
time. If your apps don't need it, Windows will try to find
another use for it (such as using it for cache), then giving it
back when the apps need it again.

Despite what some people apparently think, this is good, not bad.
Unused RAM is wasted RAM. You paid for it all, and shouldn't want
to see any of it unused and wasted.

Windows tries to find *some* use for all physical RAM at all times, and
usually succeeds. Calling what is left over 'available', thus implying
that nothing else is, is misleading. Read up at my
