I was thinking about buying this printer from a friend:

The only problem is that it's discontinued. This makes me wonder...
how long is the toner that the printer uses likely going to be sold?
For several more months? One more year? Five more, etc?

It might vary between printer manufacturers.

Hewlett-Packard is still selling toner cartridges for their really old
LaserJet models (at least back as far as the LaserJet III series, which
is about early 1990s). I have a LaserJet 6MP (bought new in 1997) which
is about to need its second replacement toner cartridge.

I don't know Konica Minolta compare, but their web site should list
sources or online sales for consumables. Try looking for a really old
model and see whether they are still supporting it.

There is a new current model 2500 which takes the same cartridges. So, don't
worry.

I don't know where you live or how much the person is asking, but Future
Shop in Canada was offering refurb models with 90 day warranty of this
model for under $200 a few weeks ago.
