AutoText is missing, how do I get it back?

I want to add a filename and path to a current document, which I have done
before. However, when I went to the Insert menu, the AutoText options lists
*Insert Filename and path* as an option under *Normal>Filename and path:* and
when I click on that it inserts the actual words "Filename and path:" onto my
Word document. I don't want that, I want the filename and path, not those
words. The choice to insert the filename and path through the header/footer
is also missing. What did I do wrong? Is it easy to fix? Or can someone
talk me through it in real newbie terms?

I believe you are seeing the field code. Try Alt-F9 (toggle field code
display) and see if this changes things for you.
