AutoShape in Excel 2003

I am using Excel 2003. I am trying to put an AutoShape from the Drawing
toolbar, with a light shade of gray behind some text. How can I do this?

I don't think that's possible. Unless you put the text in a text frame and
set the correct order (text>front and picture>back).

You could try and see if semi-transparent and/or no fill colour would do.
