AutoPlay Doesn't Work?

G

Guest

I connected a camera to a Vista Home Basic machine about 3 weeks ago, Vista
installed the camera and launched Autoplay which allowed me to choose "Import
Pictures Using Windows".

I connected the same camera today and AutoPlay doesn't launch and the camera
appears in Computer as a removable disk. The AutoPlay setting for Pictures
is still "Ask Me Every Time" and if I go down in to the removable disk I can
view the photos.

I am helping an elderly couple and while I know it is possible to import
pictures using the Photo Gallery it would be much easier for them if AutoPlay
launched.

Has anyone seen this one before and know of a solution?

Hello,

Thank you for using newsgroup!

From your post, I suggest you check the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
service has been started on the Windows Vista machine. If not, please start
it to test the issue.

If the issue persists, this problem also occurs if the camera uses the
Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) standard to transfer pictures to
the computer. Windows Vista and Windows XP SP2 use the Windows Portable
Devices (WPD) standard instead of the WIA standard to import pictures and
videos. The WPD standard supports many devices and device connectivity
options.

To resolve this problem, configure the camera to use the Picture Transfer
Protocol (PTP) standard instead of the WIA standard. For information about
how to configure the camera to use the PTP standard, see the owner's manual
for the camera. Or, visit the camera manufacturer's Web site.

Hi Ken,

The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service was set to Automatic and was
running every time the computer started and this particular camera couldn't
be configured to use the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP).

I therefore showed the user how to transfer pictures from the camera by
opening Windows Photo Galley, going to File and clicking Import From Camera
Or Scanner, highlighting their camera (which appeared as a mass storage
device/drive) and then clicking the Import button and following the prompt.

Thank you for your help on this, the issue is resolved.

Saw your posting from a few years ago...I am encountering a similar issue and
so far have not been able to resolve the issue with AutoPlay and a newly
purchased WD Passport Portable USB Hard drive. Perhaps you may be able to
shed some light on the issue.

When I connect the Portable USB HDD (its communicates and is Powered by the
USB Port) AutoPlay does Not open. I contacted Microsoft and they preformed a
few Troubleshooting steps and concluded AutoPlay was working fine. We
connected my 4 Thumb drives, 1 Ext Drive, Digital Camera, Digital
Camcorder...and with each connection AutoPlay opened. The fact that all these
other devices triggered AutoPlay to open....and the only device that wouldn't
open AutoPlay was the WD Passport Essential seems to point the cause as
something to do with the WD Passport drive and Not the OS\AutoPlay.
I have several Dell PC's, connected the WD Passport to each and the AutoPlay
Window did NOT Open. Contacted Dell's Tech Support....they preformed a few
steps and came to the same conclusion as Microsoft, AutoPlay is working Fine
on my PC and the cause has something to do with the way the OS recognizes the
WD Passport when its connected..... Dell did send me another WD Passport
Drive, it also did NOT open AutoPlay when Connected.....

I have spoken with Western Digital Tech Unit, they simply conclude that
"AutoPlay is a Function of the OS and not the HDD". Even presenting the
Troubleshooting results to them their position remains the same. I can access
the WD HDD thru MyComputer...it works fine. I can save\delete..etc to the WD
Drive...it just that AutoPlay does not open when its intially connected.

I did check WIA...it is started. As to that part of your reply about making
changes to the device I am not even sure if that is something that can be
done on a Portable Drive.

Any assistance you can provide will be appreciated.....there surely is
something strange about this WD Passport 500GB USB Portable drive.......

| I connected a camera to a Vista Home Basic machine about 3 weeks ago,
Vista
| installed the camera and launched Autoplay which allowed me to choose
"Import
| Pictures Using Windows".
|
| I connected the same camera today and AutoPlay doesn't launch and the
camera
| appears in Computer as a removable disk. The AutoPlay setting for
Pictures
| is still "Ask Me Every Time" and if I go down in to the removable disk I
can
| view the photos.
|
| I am helping an elderly couple and while I know it is possible to import
| pictures using the Photo Gallery it would be much easier for them if
AutoPlay
| launched.
|
| Has anyone seen this one before and know of a solution?
