autonumber is entering duplicate numbers

I have two tables one for customer and one for contracts. The auto
numbering on the contract table has started inputting previously used numbers
for records and will not let me save - error message reads "duplicate record"
- I do not know why this has started happening. ????

What version of Access? Have you applied all service packs to it?

Try a compact and repair. You may well have a corruption problem.

Also there was a bug in Access 2003 (I believe) that was fixed by a service
pack. Make sure that you have all the most current service packs installed.
