Automatically update style

Hi

Why does word automatically update style?
When I select text and change it to bold the rest of the text in the
document also changes and I have to go to edit => undo "automatically update
style" to change back to what I originally wanted.

How can I turn off this feature?

There's a option on the "modify" screen of each style to turn this feature
off. Uncheck "Automatically update" on that screen for each style and Word
will no longer do it.
