Automatically send Delivery & Read Receipts

I have OL 2003 and have a coleague who almost always requests a read
receipt. So, sometime ago I set up in OL to automatically grant all read
receipts. Today he emailed me saying that he received a message saying that
I had deleted the email. I have 2 questions.

1. Where did I tell OL to automatically send read receipts?
2. Can anybody tell me why he received a message saying that I had deleted
the email?

Thank you for your help.

Very helpful Diane. I have a further question regarding options in the
dialog box you described. In the bottom section "Use this option to decide
to respond ..." I checked the first one. I believe I understand that one as
"My OL sends a read receipt."

My question relates to the first two boxes in the first section. It seems
like those are saying that I can control the recipient's computer. I doubt
that I am understanding it correctly. What do those boxes control?

Thanks for the help.

1) tools, options, email, tracking
2) because you deleted a message before marking it as read
