Automatically resuming download of SP4

I am trying to download w2k SP4 (full version) but I'm currently stuck with
a dialup connection and an ISP which forces a disconnection after 2 hours.

I can get IE6 to resume the download but at the present speed it will take a
long time to get the whole SP4 file.

I can configure the DUN connection to redial immediately after a forced
disconnection, but it requires human intervention to tell IE6 to start
(resume) downloading again.

Is there a way to get IE 6 or an alternative bit of software to
*automatically* attempt a resume until the connection is re-established? I
could then leave my PC to download the whole thing overnight without having
to manually resume it every 2 hours.

I used to use a download manager called "GetRight" that could
do what you need. Haven't used it for at least five years
because I haven't had to use dialup for a long time.

Be aware that I have heard that the free/trial version of it
is now loaded with ads. Find a version earlier than 4 if you
want a free or trial version that doesn't spam you.

Other download managers abound at the usual download sites
like Tucows and download.com. The reviews usually tell you
if they are adware.

And consider simply going to MicroSoft's site and
ordering the service pack on a CD. I think the fee
is only $5.

Hi,

Have you tried enabling automatic updates? Automatic Updates downloads
while you are online. The benefit of it is that it can download little
bits at a time and store it up until you have the entire set. It then
prompts you to install. I know with WinXP, the service packs are now
in Automatic Updates. However, I am not sure if this is the case with
SP4.

The other solution would be to order the CD from MS. You would have to
pay a bit for shipping, but then you the CD. You could also get a
friend with a faster speed to download and burn it for you.

Cheers,

Lara
