Automatically logs off after logging on

When trying to log on to Windows XP I am automatically
logged off again with no option to intervene. It happens
at the logon screen and this is where I am returned to.
I can shutdown, restart and so on but not log on. I have
two accounts one password protected the other not. It
happens to both accounts. This happens in safe mode too
to all accounts including administrator.

This seems serious?

the same thing is happening to my computer, but just
before it started to happen i scheduled a task to be
preformed at system start up and in advanced option i set
a password to be used, then when i restarted it logged and
logged off in a matter of secs without a chance to stop
the task from happening, is there anyways to disable the
scheduled task to prevent it running?

You added an unrelated subject to this thread.
If PC is accessible via network, browse to it, enter scheduled tasks and
delete scheduled task ( you must have admin rights ).

As far as logon/logoff loop, your HKLM\software\microsoft\windows
nt\currentversion\winlogon
userinit=c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe
value is incorrect.

Good luck
