I'd set it to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them"
rather than turning off Automatic Updates. If you prefer to turn Automatic
Updates off, be sure to visit the Windows Update site to download the
updates manually, every week or so.

where do i go to turn off the automatic updats?

with xp start ,control panel,auto matic updates and tick turn off updates
box then apply

Melanie;
Right click My Computer and click Properties.
Click Automatic Update tab.

Unless you will be very diligent about regularly updating the computer, I
suggest you not turn off Automatic Updates.
The "Notify me..." option may be the best.
