Automatic Updates

C

Carl

Subject program was operating normally. Without any 'new' additions, software
or hardware, an error was generated "Error 1058: The services cannot be
started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled
services". Followed instructions listed in 'services.msc'. Attempted to start
program, but failed and received the repeat error above.
Have check other resources such as FAQ's, but did not find a definitive
solution or answer to the problem, "how do I re-establish the Automatic
Update function on my laptop?"

Carl,

If neither of these MSKBs provide a resolution to the error:

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive
an "Error 1058" error message on a computer that is running Windows XP
or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896224

"Could not start the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service. Error 1058"
error message when you manually start the Remote Procedure Call service
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838428

then it's most likely that they system is infected with malware. Many
Users with the same error message have reported that a scan done here
resolves the update service issue:

Suggest you seek further assistance at a reputable anti-malware forum if
*any* malware was detected during the OneCare scan:
