Taken directly from the Help and Support Center. Try it! It woks like a

To turn on automatic updates
1.. Open System in Control Panel.
2.. On the Automatic Updates tab, click either of the first two settings.
Notes
a.. To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, and then
double-click System.
b.. To turn off automatic updates for your computer, select Turn off
automatic updating; I want to update my computer manually.
c.. If you choose not to use automatic updating, you can always install
specific updates from the Windows Update Web site. Open Windows Update in
Help and Support Center.
Go to Control Panel / System. Then click the "automatic updates" tab.
However, consider just checking regularly for updates yourself. Its always
good to know what, when, and why you are downloading and installing
something.
I have some XP Pro machines on our LAN that don't update, even though all
the settings are set properly. Are there any particular ports or services
on a firewall that need to be open for the updates to work?
