Automatic Updates on the Control Panel are disabled. The radio buttons are
grayed out and can't be changed.

Can anyone help me get them enabled?

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Under the General tab, check "Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services",
click "apply" and reboot.

Hi Chuck,

Click start/run, type services.msc and click ok. Locate the Automatic Update
service and double click it. You want to "start" the service and set the
"startup type" to automatic.

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Windows Update
-and-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Windows Update

In the right pane, if the DisableWindowsUpdateAccess value exists, right-click and then click delete it.

Everybody had good Ideas except they didn't work! :<( Automatic Update
service is running in automatic. I tried turning it off, restarting,
turning it on and restarting; didn't work. Registry solution also no help
HKEY...USER\...\Windows Update didn't have a Disable...Access line, and
HKEY...MACHINE\...\Windows Update doesn't exist.

The problem doesn't seem to be that Automatic Update doesn't work, but only
that I can't change its settings. The settings buttons are grayed out.

I am running XP Pro SP2. The Security Center Automatic Updates bar returns
a "Could not change your automatic update settings...." error message when I
tried to use it to change the settings.

:-) Jumping up and down!! The answer was Registry entry"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\"

Apparently WinGuides TweakManager writes an overriding policy when you make
the automatic updates settings change in that program. This policy disables
the ability to make the changes normally.

Thanks for the help and the article "How to configure and use Automatic
Updates in Windows XP." A reference in that article to article 328010 led me
to the answer

Sounds like you aren't the admin on your own machine. Which XP do you have?
Pro or home? If Pro, logoff and logon as the Admin and fix your normal
account. If Home, reboot into safe mode and do the same thing.
