"Automatic updates" icon won't go away

I installed the XP SP3 updates before the automatic updates managed to tell
me it was available.

The auto update icon on the task bar now permanently tells me I have updates
waiting to be installed - even though I've re-installed them again using the
auto updater.

I have auto updater set to tell me when new updates are available but not to
install them automatically.

How can I :
1. get rid of the auto updater off the task bar (without changing the
settings)?
2. make it know I have already updated the PC?

TIA
Scott

No. You haven't. The question is, what did you really download and could it
be the cause of your problems.

Is this the "Office XP SP3" you are speaking of again?

I think pherhaps scott is using the new update feature which updates both
office applications and windows xp, may be a while before they get it fully
sorted scott.

Sorry Maurice N but I haven't posted another thread by that subject name.
I don't know if I'm not explaining myself enough but I don't think people
have got the gist of the issue.

Automatic updates (the little gold shield icon on the task bar) keeps
wanting to download Office XP SP3. Having downloaded it numerous times, the
icon still appears and tells me there are updates waiting to be installed.
Each update is screwing up the Office shortcut bar.

How can I get the auto updater to recognise there are no more updates needed
(the Office update website confirms this) and get rid of it off the task bar
without adjusting its settings?

TIA Scott

Hi,

Here is the thread Maurice mentioned:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/mi...821464f4e3b/d3b0ae6181b7954a#d3b0ae6181b7954a

But as I understand your issue it will just start do download Office
XP SP3 again, I'm afraid the procedure in the link above will not work.

What you need to do is to hide the update:

Double click on the AU icon in the notification area and select
"Custom Install", unselect the update in question, and when later on
asked, select to never show the update again.
