Automatic updates display problem

Windows has just completed an automatic update, and restarted the laptop. On
the reboot, everrything proceeds normally until after the Windows loading
screen. As soon as the desktop screen is supposed to appear, the entire
screen goes black. I can still see the cursor, and move it around, but
nothing else works. Can anyone help?
