My automatic update window is in background with auto update turned on. How
do I get the window out of background so I can change auto update?

let me try again. when i click open the auto updates window, the update is
clicked for automatic - fine. but the other options while visible, can't be
clicked - there is like a film over them.

Hmmm. Not sure I understand your problem.

Look at this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/getstarted/autoupdates.mspx
Read the part under "To turn Automatic Updates on or off."

- Are you an administrative user on the machine?
- Is the machine a member of a larger domain (like at a
business/university/school of any sort?)

I am an administrative user and my lap top is part of the hamilton college
domain (network) when I am there. I suspect the automatic update lock is part
of the college security system. Can I override?
