I have automatic updates disabled. I prefer to do them manually being still
connected to a dial up connection !!

Is there any way to ge rid of the red sheild in the taskbar?

Or disable the security center service. It doesn't actually provide any
security, just nags.

Embarrasingly simple. Thank you Zilbandy.

Yes. Go to the Control Panel, click on the Security Center and look on
the left side for, "Change the way Security Center alerts me." Uncheck
automatic updates.

Do you understand that you can have AU enabled but configured such that
you're only Notified of available updates (i.e., you don't have to download
or install them via AU)?

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

Wouldn't it be safer overall to have AU enabled and the Notify Only option
selected such that you'd always be aware of available updates (e.g.,
out-of-band security updates that are not released on Patch Tuesday) and
which updates apply to your specific computer?
