Automatic Update of Links

Links tab from HELP

I have created a mail merge word document with links to a spreadsheet. I
have the "Automatic Update" button on in the Edit tab but the word document
DOES NOT automatically update !

Also, I cant seem to protect the document!

Which version of Word?

Please note that mail merge and form fields protection are incompatible...
