I have downloaded Service Pack 2 from Windows Update on one of my PC's, but
when will the Automatic Update feature inform me that Service Pack 2 is
ready for download? I have it set so it downloads updates etc. in the
background and then informs me of updates that are ready to be
installed--but as yet it has not told me SP2 is ready to be installed, nor
has it attempted to download it.

1) In the Auto update tab under System, turn off Auto update
2) Start IE, tools > windows updates
3) Install whatever components needed and select Express Install
4) Restart when update is completed
5) Do a express install again and you should see Windows XP Sp2 > Install it
(Backup important data b4 trying)
6) After install, turn on Auto update again

Or you can download the SP2 network file at www.microsoft.com/downloads for
offline installation (look under most popular downloads)
