Automatic Swtich to Manual Calculation

Is there a file size/dependancy limit that will cause excel to switch a
file to manual calculation? If so, does anyone have an idea where
these limits are? Does anyone have a list of items that would cause
Excel to switch a file to manual calculation?
 
I've never seen excel switch to manual calculation based on the size of a
workbook.

But I have seen excel switch calculation mode. This setting is picked up from
the first workbook you open in that excel session.

Your first opened workbook was saved with manual calculation, you'll be in
manual mode.

Your first opened workbook was saved with autocalculation, you'll be in
autocalc.

Could that have been what you saw?
