I'm running XP Pro. I need to download large amounts of data late at night
when the bandwidth is available. Is there any way I can program my computer
to start at a fixed time, run a program for a fixed time and then shutdown?

I will be very grateful to anyone who can help me. Getting up in the middle
of the night to do all this manually is killing me!!!

Thanks in advance.

Some BIOSs support a preset PC startup. Use the
Task Scheduler and shutdown.exe to shut it down
after your download has finished.

I have a number of my PC's wake up 4:55AM each morning to do backups, get
update, do virus scans etc, then some go back to sleep at 6:30AM when its all
done.,

- Check the power options to make sure it is supported for your PC. I had to
update the BIOS firmware on one PC to be able to do it.
- Put your PC into standy or hibernation so it can wake up to perform the
tasks, and not power down.
- I use third party utilities that go by the names Poweroff, Winoff25,
sleeper.exe etc to down the machines. They got features where you can program
the shutdown to include sound, warnings etc.
- Use the taks scheduler to wake the PC up, but make sure to check off in
the "advance" option, "wake up the PC" to perform the task.
