Which version of Messenger are you using? I have "Windows Messenger
4.7" & "MSN Messenger 6.0", I cannot change anything until I am signed
into the system.

| Yes before you sign in open messenger and choose status
| and appear offline.Then sign in.
Just block all of your contacts one by one and shut down
Messenger. When you open it again, even though everyone
is blocked, you can still see who is or is not online.
Then "unblock" whomever you want to talk to. That's what
I do.
Unfortunately this option doesn't exist in any current version of Microsoft's Messenger
clients, it is on the suggestion list however.
