Got XP Pro on the new computer. Didn't realize it came with Windows Messenger, so one of the first things I did was download MSN Messenger 6, which I use to work from home. I hadn't been on it for ten minutes after installation (I set up auto-login on MSN Mess, btw, and it worked) when I saw that Win Messenger was on XP. Here's exactly what I did:
1) Uninstalled MSN Messenger 6 through add/remove programs (took off "hide" in sysoc.inf to do it)
2) Downloaded/installed Windows Messenger 5
Now each time I log into this user account, instead of seeing 'Sign in as user' in my normal Messeger box, a dialog box titled '.Net Messenger Service' starts up and prompts me to 'Please sign in with your .NET Passport'. After I signed in the first time and checked 'Auto Sign In', then set up Messenger to start up at login and run in background, I completely exited out of Messenger to test. It didn't auto sign in, just popped up that '.Net Messenger Service' sign in dialog.
It's stayed that way now. How do I get auto sign in for Windows Messenger back? It's not a huge problem, but it's still bothersome--if only Softie would allow me to completely uninstall and reinstall these programs, I wouldn't have run into this in the first place.
