AUTOMATIC SCHEDULED WINXP UPDATE WON'T RUN????

Hi,

Under system tools and scheduled tasks in Windows XP, the automatic
updates won't run. It was configured by wizard. it gives message
something to the effect "incorrect password or user".

I can manually start it by an icon. I am just curious why this program
won't run. I did all the steps, the configuration wizard demanded and
reinstalled it a few times by clicking on "add scheduled task" and
deleting it. I cannot get it to work, while Norton, etc works.

What is the problem?

Did you re-enter the user/password in the task to make sure it was correct?

What is the problem?

Was the task set up with an administrator account that has a password? Is
that account still valid (present on the system and can be used to log on)?
This is required for any scheduled task to work.

Other suggestions:

--Remove the existing scheduled task. Then use System> Automatic Update to
create a new schedule.
--Check that the Automatic Update service has "automatic" noted as its
startup type in services.msc

I removed from schedule "windows update" and then went to "my
computer" and right clicked, bringing up properties and then to
automatic and configured that. Hope it works.

Roger, I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of Live Update as I don't use
it. I do know that the program has trouble now and then and Symantec is
usually pretty quick about getting an update out to fix it again. Consult
Symantec's online technical support for more info. You may need to
reinstall that portion of the program.

Any idea about what's going on with the user name and password business?
Are you logged on with an account in the administrator group? Does it have
a password assigned to it?

Again, Automatic Updates requires the Automatic Update service to be
running. The startup type is most important and should be set to
"Automatic." Task Scheduler service, since you are implementing that, will
need to be automatic as well.

Check your Event Viewer to be sure that the time is being updated on a
regular basis. The authentication process at Windows Update can be very
particular about date/time settings. I was having trouble with
time.nist.gov. After switching to time-a.nist.gov, Internet Time was able
to update on a regular basis and Automatic Updates started working again.
