Not auto, but Ctrl+S every few lines, defeats the unexpected crash.

Yes, thank you. I know how to do "control+S". So I was wondering if Windows
Mail has an auto-save feature when composing emails. If not, mayb that's
something the programmers should be working on for their next update.

There have not any updates to Windows Mail, nor will there be..
WM has been deprecated in favor of Windows Live Mail.

Windows Live Mail looks like an email client (as opposed to webmail). If so,
does it have a feature to auto save an email in the drafts folder while
composing it -- so you don't have to press "ctrl+s" all the time?

No. None of Microsoft's free email clients have that feature.
You can compose in Word, which does auto-save.
