We do that by adding an external micro that requires a regular heartbeat
generated serially for app on the OS. If it times out it either closes a
reed switch across the reset button or power button, or cycles power via
relay/s (BIOS set to restart on power restored).
Problem though would be if the system was very errant.
A micrto could allow for n reties then stop rebooting.
