Automatic Power-up and Shutdown

Is the any straightforward method of having Windows 2000
shut down or go to standby at a specific time each day,
and wake up again at a specific time each day? It is a
simple as that. System BIOS seems to support the
concept, but power management within the operating system
seems to be at cross-purposes. I would be willing to pay
for the necessary guidance to make this automation
possible.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

You can shedule a task to start at a specific date & time, frequency, ...
with the option to wake the computer.

Similarly you can shedule a task that runs a command line shutdown program.
There are different shutdown programs on the internet.

The most reliable option in my view is to shedule a task for shutdown and
use a hardware timer power switch to turn off and on power at the desired
times. The big advantage of this solution is that the power cycling
guarantees (more or less) to have a working system after the cold boot.

I assume you are referring to the task scheduler in
Windows 2000. Perhaps I have not looked closely enough,
but I don't recall seeing this standby option listed. Is
there pre-written script for this?

I was hopping to find someone with direct experience with
this. I have experimented with one downloaded program
and never got it to work without improperly shutting down
the computer. I don't want to corrupt the boot record

The wake on LAN feature would be good for the startup
side, but power management within the operating system
seems to prevent its use. It just seems strange to me
that this feature would just be there to use, but my
needs are sometimes weird anyway.

Thanks for the input.

The Sheduled Tasks wizard let you finish with invoking advanced settings. In
the advanced settings there is a check box "Wake up computer"
