Automatic Indents

Using Word 2003 after upgrading from 97. When using automatic bulleted or
numbered lists, after typing the first list item and then hitting enter, the
list automatically indents one level for no apparent reason, and it's
necessary to hit the Decrease Indent button to bring the thing back where it
should be. Is there a way around this annoying "feature"?

The default bulleted and numbered lists in Word 2002 and above are indented.
There is no way to change this. A more effective way of applying bullets or
numbering is to use the List Bullet or List Number style, which has the
format you want. Ctrl+Shift+L is the built-in shortcut to apply the List
Bullet style. You may wish to assign a keyboard shortcut to List Number as
well.
