I would like to create automatic footnotes in the chicago style in word. As
far as I can tell, the "Insert Citation" area only works in MLA format. Is
this the case?

No, you should be able to select "Chicago" in the "Style" dropdown
list next to the "Insert Citation" button. By default, there are 10
styles you can pick from (APA, Chicago, MLA, Turabian, ...).
