OK, points well taken.

Do you have any ballpark figures on roughly how long it takes to make a HD
backup to a USB2.0 HD enclosure drive for say 20 GB of date? I know it
will depend on a lot of things, but are we talking like one hour, or 10
hours?

BTW, what I meant below in having a backup after installing a bunch of
programs wasn't quite clear. I am going to try to use PCmover to see if
it will successfully copy my old Win98SE computer stuff over to the new
WinXP computer (and save me a lot of hassle), but if it doesn't work out
well, I'll ideally be able to roll back by using the backup partition on the
same drive that I saved prior to using PCmover. Hopefully!

No, I don't. As I said, I've never paid any attention to how long it
took. As long as it was done by the time I got up in the morning, I
didn't care. But I doubt very much that copying 20GB would take as
much as 10 hours. I always back up more than that, and it was never 10
hours.
