Automate Captions

R

Rekoop

I have captions set up for various tables and figures
with corresponding ToC's for both. Currently if I move a
table/figure in the document I:
1. delete the caption
2. Move the table/figure
3. Insert a new caption
4. Update the appropriate ToC

Is there a way just to drag/drop (cut/paste) the
table/figure and have Word auto-update the caption
number? Then I would have to complete step 4 from above.

Thank-you

Hi Rekoop

I assume you've created the captions using Insert > Caption or Insert >
Reference Caption?

First, find out whether your pictures are in-line or floating (see
The draw layer: a metaphysical space
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/DrwGrphcs/DrawLayer.htm).

It will be *much* easier if your pictures are in-line. In the easiest
scenario, imagine a picture where you do not want the text to wrap around
the picture. If you click the ¶ button, you'll see a ¶ symbol for every
end-of-paragraph mark. So you would see:

[picture]¶
Figure 1 My picture caption¶

If this is what you see, then click the picture, hold down Shift, and click
at the end of the caption. This selects both paragraphs. Now, use Edit >
Cut, move to where you want to position the picture, and use Edit > Paste.

Note that the caption number won't upate automatically. Click on it and do
F9, or ctrl-a and F9 to update all fields in the document (including your
Table of Contents).

The following page might have some further ideas for you:
How to keep a figure on the same page as its caption

Hope this helps.
