autoformat hyphen

I have unchecked in AutoFormat the box to change the hyphen (--) to a dash
(-) but it keeps doing it. I want a -- to show a break in thought.

How do I fix that? Thanks.

Isn't that what an em dash is for? Two hyphens are used to represent an em
dash in text typed on a typewriter, which doesn't have an em dash character.

That's correct. But when I type two dashes, it keeps changing it back to a
single dash even though I don't have that box checked in AutoFormat.

Do you have the option disabled in AutoFormat As You Type or just in
AutoFormat?

Both.
