Unless I format a cd I get a message saying that I cannot write on it. Windows XP help says that I can right click on the "D" drive icon and get an option to format, but that option is not there. Surely XP will format a cd. My old MacIntosh could recognize an unformatted floppy and ask me if I wanted to format it. Is XP not that smart?

Formatting a CD-RW is only necessary when using packet writing as the
burning method. Packet writing allows you to write files to the disk "on
the fly." Third party software must be installed if you want to do use your
CD burner in this manner.
XP's CD burning uses "mastering sessions" instead so formatting a CD-RW is
not necessary.
