Autofit rows not working

using excel 2002 in Windows XP professional

Multiple row text spreadsheet. Autofit row does not
resize all the rows, Ihave to manually resize some of the
rows. I've checked the affected rows and cells for
returns at end of the cells. No cell approaches the 256
character limit. Manually resizing the rows work but this
affects many rown in a very large table so I would
apprectaite some assistance on how to make autofit row
work properly.

Rows containing Merged cells exhibit this problem -- if you can remove the
merging aspect it should resize fine.
