Autofilters not working

I'm having isolated problems with worksheets that have
been extracted from non-excel sources (i.e. using their
export facility). I want to run the autofilters across the
header cells, and they just don't appear (only sometimes
though!). The autofilter shows a check mark when selected
on the menu, but there is no visible box to click on in
the actual header cells. It wont even work if I copy the
data into a new worksheet and try again. Has anyone
encountered anything similar? Is there a general fix?

I've seen this.

Sometimes minimizing the worksheet window and resizing helps. Sometimes not.
Sometimes minimizing the application window and resizing helps. Sometimes not.
Sometimes closing the workbook and reopening helps. Sometimes not.
Sometimes closing excel and reopening helps. Sometimes not.
Sometimes removing the filter and reapplying that helps. Sometimes not.

In a few instances, I've copied my data to a new worksheet and tossed the
offending one.

I got an email attachment from a co-worker who had the problem. I opened the
attachment and it was fine. I sent it back (not even sure if I saved it
first). The copy he got back worked ok.

I don't know what causes it or what the fix is. (Maybe memory, maybe windows,
or maybe excel.)

Sigh.
