When I type a date a bubble appears with an alternative format of the date
and if I press enter to start typing on another line, this alternative format
applies itself to the end of the date i've typed. Its driving me nuts!!!!

You don't mention what version of Word you are using, the following are for
2003 and prior, 2007 instructions maybe differ but the intent is the same.
If you press ESC when you see the 'bubble' you can then continue typing,
without the new format being inserted.
What you are seeing is a Smart Tag for Date, go to Insert, Autocorrect,
Smart Tag tab and uncheck the box for Date (Smart tag list). As you can see
here you can also turn all Smart Tags off with the top check box.
Hope this helps
