autofill using mouse is not working in excel 2001

I hope that someone can help me with this problem, it just started up
today and I have done all the searching on the internet that I could
but cannot solve the problem.

Description:
Excel today just stopped showing the "+" cursor that usually comes up
when you have highlighted a set of cells and allows you to pull down
to fill a series or generally autofill based on the contents of the
cell.
I can still do the autofill by going to the menu item and selectign
the correct option for it, but the quick way does not work anymore.
I am using office xp with windows XP +SP2+ all recent patches.

Any ideas anyone, would appreciate any help in this matter as I use
autofill (with the mouse) quiet a lot.

Thanks

Check here:
Tools > Options > Edit tab
"Allow cell drag and drop" should be ticked.
Does this solve the problem?

Great, thanks.It worked.
Any idea why it could change on its own?

That setting would not have changed "on its own".

It was user-assisted or some workbook you loaded had code to disable it.

Ah ha,
That is it. I had loaded a worksheet that had a message saying that
copy and paste was disabled.
I dont know why they did not have a macro triggered by the close
action to remove those restrictions!! (the worksheet was developed by
the indian income tax dept to help e-filing so I guess that
figures) :)
