Hi

Well I am entering date into cell, Selecting that cell and 12 rows below;
right clicking on Auto Fill menu that appears; selecting my choice.

He is in India, I am in UK, so I am not sure, but assuming the same, as we
are following the same set on instructions

I can't follow your steps because, after selecting the 13 cells, I do not
see an Auto Fill menu to right click on. I do this by dragging the fill
handle with the right mouse button. If by chance you're getting to this
same menu then it is indeed a puzzler why your friend in India does not at
least see the options to fill dates. Granted if the first cell does not
contain a date the date selections will be disabled, but he should at least
see them.

It's just a guess but as I had problems following your steps, he may too ;-)

Maybe Alexey is using this, (from Help), which seems a long way round doing
what the drag handle will do in an instant.

To use the Fill command, do the following:
1.. Starting with the cell that contains the first date, select the range
of cells that you want to fill with the sequential list of dates.
2.. On the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Fill, and then click
Series.

Hi both - thanks for your posts and help:

below is the actual text that we are both using:

Start Excel 2007 by double-clicking the Excel icon or by using the Start
menu. When the Excel 2007 screen opens, make cell A2 the active cell and
enter the following date: 23/7/2006.

Place your mouse pointer on the bottom right corner of the cell and it will
turn into a thin cross (+). Hold your left mouse button and drag down the
first column, Auto Filling the dates as you go, (until row 14). When you
stop, notice the AutoFill option butt on at the lower right corner of the
last cell.

Click on the AutoFill options button to display its menu.

Click the radio button next to the Fill Years option.

You can see how the year has been automatically incremented by one for each
date cell.

I can only assume that my colleague in India is not using a date field.

I considered that but it doesn't really fit his description. He mentions a
right click for instance, and doesn't mention 'series' at all. For my money
he and his friend are having a 'failure to communicate' (obscure reference
to the movie Cool Hand Luke), but he appears to have ridden off into the
ether so we'll never know...<g>

Welcome back from the ether, Alexy!

I have followed your steps except that I entered 7/23/2006 to start because
I use US settings. I see date fill options in the popup as you do.

However when I start with your date 23/7/2006, which is not valid as a date
with my settings, I do not get date fill options. Try this yourself be
starting with 7/26/2006.

I believe that your friend is not entering the date in a format that Excel
recognizes as a date with his regional settings.

Instead of typing a date ask your friend to start by just press Ctrl-; which
will automatically enter today's date in a valid format.

Btw, Alexey, a faster way to get fill options is to drag the fill handle by
the _right_ mouse button.

Thanks Jim

Yes was just coming back to post and to tell you that the problem was
resolved and it was due to the fact that India are using US dates and we are
using UK dates.

Thanks for your help. Thanks also for pointing out the error in our
tutorial - I will get it changed.

Yes, as soon as I posted that I thought it wasn't relevant to their
situation after all. But I see that it's all now resolved.
