The autoexec.bat and config.sys files exist in XP for backwards
compatibility only (installations). They are not used by the operating
system.
Sysedit is still present but is not of much use as most of the system's INI
settings are no longer handled through these files. They are present only
for the benefit of older programs that depend on their existence. Tread
cautiously before making changes to the INI files.
The edit command is still functional in XP's emulated environments (cmd.exe
and command.com). Use Start> Run> CMD to bring up a command prompt window
and type edit /? to see the list of available switches and operands. The
same list will come up in a command.com window. NOTE: XP's command.com is
*not* the same as the one in Win9x.
No mention in your post of what you're trying to accomplish. There is
information in Help and Support about using XP's command
interpreters/emulators. May also want to look at the information it
contains about running older programs using the "compatibility wizard." The
