Autoexec.bat

Got a SLIGHT problem... windows won't start anymore! I
got a trojan virus from school computers which (I think)
deleted autoexec.bat. Now on startup I get a message
saying missing OS or it tries to boot to a network. As I
don't have a winsdows disc I was wondering if there was a
way to bring up a command prompt and create a new
autoexec.bat file? Any ideas?

BTW: It's an AMI BIOS incase you needed to know...

You're not going to be able to do much of anything

Hi, Shane. Windows XP doesn't use autoexec.bat, and this would have
nothing to do with the errors you're getting. If your hardware is all
right, you might be able to do a repair install, or you might have to
format the drive and start over. I'm not sure what you mean by not
having a Windows disk - surely you must have the operating system cd
with which you installed Windows or at least a Restore Disk (or special
key press like F10 for HPs) if your computer is an OEM. Without more
information from you, it isn't possible to give a specific answer. You
might want to take your computer to a good local repair shop (not a
BestBuy or CompUSA type of store) and have them sort it out for you.

Good luck,

Mlake

One should always have your OS CD handy. Buy one.

Agreed. Ends up being the same price or cheaper anyway, but you'll get a
PC back that works.

Windows XP does not use autoexec.bat. As a start, Set the BIOS to boot
CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the
immediate R for Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB
over. Give
Fixboot
Fixmbr
ATTRIB -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini
DEL C:\Boot.ini
(thus deleting the old one which may have been damaged)
BootCfg /Rebuild

But if the disk has really been fouled up you will be facing a reinstall
